50 essential DC history books for adults. What about for kids?

50 Essential Washington DC History Books is exactly as the title suggests. H-DC (a website and community all about the history of DC) is looking for additions to this list. The 2011 list, shown in the H-DC post, was compiled by DC Public Library Washingtoniana Division and the DC Center for the Book.

Some titles currently on the list are:

• Jonetta Rose Barras, The last of the Black emperors: the hollow comeback of Marion Barry in the new age of Black leaders
• Elizabeth Clark-Lewis (ed), First freed: Washington, D.C. in the emancipation era
• Louise Daniel Hutchinson, The Anacostia story, 1608-1930
• Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, Dream city: race, power, and the decline of Washington, D.C.
• Keith E. Melder, City of magnificent intentions: a history of Washington, District of Columbia

Ward 5 tween holds school supply drive

Twelve year-old Ward 5 resident Ahriana Merryweather wants to help other DC kids prepare for school. The supply drive is open through August 20. Details are in the video and in the blog post ? have you dropped off some school supplies at Grassroots Gourmet for Ahriana Merryweather's back-to-school supplies drive ? you have until Sunday to do so. Ask questions and request backpacks via email, brownies.bits@gmail.com.

Are you a hero to the kids in your program, your neighbors, family members?   It doesn't take a lot.   All you have to do is share information about DC Free Summer Meals Program (meals served Monday - Saturday).   The flyer is available in PDF and JPEG, both below.

One City Youth is encouraging DC Free Summer Meals Program heroes to email their outreach efforts so they can be documented them and heroes recognized!

Great activity to do with the kids: making bread in a bag!
